Giddy Ups - July 2024
Hey Giddy Up Family,
We've got some bittersweet news, and it's a two-step kinda situation. You might have heard some whispers, and that's okay – we wanted our musicians to be the first to know. Due to a change in lease ownership, Giddy Ups will have to say goodbye to our current location after one last epic bash in early August.
But hold your horses! We're not saddlin' up quite yet. Throughout June and July, Giddy Ups will be open for business as usual, honoring all existing bookings and concerts. That means you can still get your dose of good tunes and good company!
Here's the real kicker: We're not happy about leaving. This whole situation feels more like a "yeehaw, out of here" than a genuine step forward for the neighborhood. We call it gentrification and an unsatisfiable act of greed, you might call it progress – whatever the label, it means losing a piece of that "living room extension" vibe as neighborhood bar and concert venue, that Nancy M. Morgan built – simply a place where you can come as a stranger and leave as a friend.
The good news for you, our amazing patrons: We're not going down without a fight! The Giddy Ups team is actively searching for a new space to keep the music (and the mission) alive. We won't leave you high and dry – our last weekend at this location will be an unforgettable "Out With A Bang" party to celebrate the long history and the heart of Giddy Ups.
The even better news: Our commitment to creating a warm and welcoming space for the community hasn't changed. As soon as we find a new home, Giddy Ups plans to reopen, doors wide open, ready to welcome you back to the "Biggest Little Stage in South Austin."
Speaking of that new home: If you hear of a space that sounds like a perfect fit for Giddy Ups, we'd love to hear your suggestions!
Thanks for being a part of the Giddy Ups family. We'll keep you posted on our search for a new location, and in the meantime, let's make these next few months legendary!
See you soon,

Nancy M. Morgan, a beloved figure in the Austin community and the owner of Giddy Ups passed away after a valiant battle with recurring cancer. She was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many with her warmth, generosity, and unwavering spirit.
Nancy, who owned Giddy Ups for more than two decades, transformed her honky-tonk into a place that feels like home to all who enter. In her own words, she described Giddy Ups as an extension of her living room, a place where people from all walks of life come together to share good times and create cherished memories. She is known as "Mom" or " Sister" to many patrons, and her nurturing spirit created a sense of family within the bar's walls.
Her principles of respect, decency, and manners are evident in the atmosphere she cultivated at Giddy Ups. She had a zero-tolerance policy for rude or vulgar behavior and firmly believed in treating people with kindness and respect. The motto "NO WHINING" spoke to her commitment to providing a welcoming and harmonious environment for everyone who crosses the threshold.
Nancy's establishment welcomes a diverse array of visitors, from bikers to attorneys, from hillbillies to real estate agents, spanning the entire spectrum of races and backgrounds. She often highlighted the remarkable unity that exists among her customers, showing that, beneath the surface, they all come together as friends.
Giddy Ups is more than just a bar; it is a place where lifelong friendships are formed. Nancy took pride in her role as a community builder, introducing newcomers to the regulars and ensuring that everyone felt at home. Her approach to welcoming "newbies" and later accepting them into the Giddy Ups family is a testament to her inclusive and nurturing nature.
Nancy's journey as a music venue owner was a labor of love. She embraced the spirit of Austin as the "Live Music Capital of the World" and worked tirelessly to make Giddy Ups a hub for local talent. Her commitment to providing a platform for musicians to express themselves and support each other was unwavering. She had a profound respect for artists and believed in creating an environment where they could share their art comfortably.
Nancy's legacy at Giddy Ups is a testament to her dedication to the local music scene and her belief in the power of community. She did not involve herself in the politics of charging money for musical events and focused on the musicians' well-being. Her establishment proudly boasts "the biggest little stage in South Austin."
Nancy Morgan was not just a business owner; she was a cherished friend, confidante, and mentor. Her enduring impact on the Austin community and the lives she touched will be remembered with deep affection. Her direct quotes, which showcased her authenticity and the spirit of Giddy Ups, will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Nancy M. Morgan will forever be loved, respected, and remembered by the many people whose lives she enriched. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of calling her friend.

The Spring Fling Music Festival at Giddy Ups will be celebrating its 15th inauguration at Giddy Ups, the fourteenth as a multi-day festival in March 2024.
What started out as a private house concert under a massive, 500-year-old oak tree, featuring over a dozen bands in the mid-90s, mostly for visiting Europeans, has now become an integral part of the "Biggest Little Stage in South Austin," Giddy Ups.
Trying to feature mostly independent artists and bands, its main emphasis has always been to showcase local Austin and Texas talent, and our Sunday is considered a homecoming for some of the talent that regularly graces our stage.
For more information see our little SFMF 2024independent box to the right.
See you in March!
